Game Review: Back to the Farm game

My parents picked this game up at a street fair in the 70′s. I have played this game for many years a love it! Unfortunately, it is hard to find. But this game teaches about organic farming, and the process of farming.

Farmer Cards

Each farmer has a card to fill. The top (brown) cards are for setting up your farm, so they include tools, tractors and etc that you need to buy. The middle (green) line are for your animals and the bottom (blue) line are for your products from the farm. Now a farmer must purchase their items in order, so you have to fill the top line before you fill the middle and the bottom. The board also has some tricky spaces, such as the poisonous pesticides space, which you lose some of your items. My 6 year old loves this game, but I will warn you, it takes awhile to play! This is a Monopoly style game that takes some time, but it is really fun!

Digger’s Garden Match game review

Digger's Garden Match

Digger’s Garden Match is one of the many SimplyFun games that I enjoy! This game is an offshoot of dominoes, but a lot more fun! Instead of just matching numbers, like on dominoes, you can match up either color or shape, while trying to gain the most points.

While this game is mostly for the preschool set, adults and older kids enjoy it too! I have played this with just myself and my husband and with a large group of kids ranging from 4 to 10 in ages and we all had fun!

So make sure to pick up a copy as this is a great addition to any household!

The best cosplay pictures ever!

While surfing the Marvel website, I ran across this amazing cosplay photographer, Jay Tablante. His cosplay (costume play or artistry) photos are not only true to the costumes but bring out the characters as well!

Here are a couple of my favorites!

I have just started my SimplyFun games business and would love to host your party! Please contact me at krisy@mygeekvoice.com, I need 2 bookings in 20 days to make my goal and I am really hoping that you can help me with that! I can even show off the games at your event or MOM group as well! Thanks! For the month of January, you will receive double host awards!!!

Each week, I also plan on focusing on one game and reviewing it, if you like it and want to learn more, or purchase it, please contact me. The games are fun, educational and most can be played within 30 minutes. These games are great for family nights, homeschool learning or just plain fun! The thing that I like as well is that they are well constructed games and are fair market price! As someone who loves games to begin with I can’t wait for an excuse to come over and play games with you all.

My goals with this business is to eventually own a game store where people can come and have game nights in a fun and safe environment for families and kids and this step will help me with that goal, so please I ask that you help me reach my goals but booking a party or passing this on to someone who you think would like to have a SimplyFun party!

Epic Mickey: Epic or Not?

This year at PAX, one of the bigger game roll outs was Epic Mickey! This game is limited to the Wii console and has it’s own special edition Wii Nunchuck in the shape of a paint brush! While the game rating is still pending, I would have to venture a guess that it will be an E8 Rating (everyone above the age of 8), only because there are a couple of scary monsters in it. However, the beauty of this game is that you can “erase” and “repaint” the bad guys. The graphics were awesome, especially considering that the Wii is not an HD upgrader, so the graphics tend not to look as good as the Xbox or the PS3 (which are upgraders). The graphics were really pretty and immersive.

The game was really fun to play as well! Sophia (6) really enjoyed it and had a lot of fun with it.(As you can see!) The game included tutorials and hints along the way, via a cute character, which was helpful to Sophia and other players. The release date for this game was just announced as November 30th, 2010, just in time for Christmas! After the buzz at PAX, I would HIGHLY suggest preordering it because it will go fast, I have a feeling that it will be Tickle Me Elmo proportions!

Epic Mickey is fun to play, awesome to look at and enjoyable for the whole family. I think this game is as epic as it’s title! Enjoy!

V-Motion rocks for kids!

We recently bought our daughter the V-Tech V-Motion game system. She loves it! It has a great controller that is easy to use. You can play the games with either the joystick option, or use the entire controller like a Wii controller.

The games are fun and educational and I have no problem letting her play while I get my housework done. I’m not nervous about any inappropriate content. If you already have VSmile games, the VMotion is backwards compatable, which makes it nice. I haven’t played with this feature yet, because I just found the VSmile game today. However, once we try it out, I’ll get back to you all. Another great feature is the USB option. You can upload your child’s progress to the VTech website to see how they are improving and learning!

As a mom, I totally recommend this game system for your younger kids. It’s fun, educational and they learn some basic gaming moves as well! This Geek Mom gives it two thumbs up!

The insomniac Xbox experience

Don’t you love it when a.) you can’t get to sleep because of a great Xbox game or b.) you wake up and decide to play Xbox at 2am? I sure do. Although I love my Xbox, it has caused many a sleepless nights in my household and there are only two of us that currently play this console! Wait until my daughter is old enough to really game on it!

The days of warm milk and cookies to help you sleep are over, Xbox has soured the milk and burned the cookies for all of us Xbox users. You can usually tell us Xbox insomniacs when we get into to work the next day, you can find us mumbling about the level we were last playing (as if we were still in the game) or you will notice that we absently button mash while at our cubicles. We are also usually equipped with either a Red Bull, RockStar or a seriously huge Mountain Dew and are slugging away at it with no abandon.

So, for all you late night Xbox’ers or PS3′ers, for that matter, I toast you with my Mountain Dew here at 2:30am!

Spike 2008 Video Game Award World Premieres

This year’s Video Game Awards hosted by Spike Tv launched nine World Premieres for new video games or video game add-ons. Here’s the recap:

Gears of War 2 Combustible Map Pack: This map pack had three maps that each looked amazing. This is now available for download through Xbox Live!

  1. Flood: In this map, you have to get to the high ground and quick, because the walls will close in on you before you know it!
  2. Gold Rush: This is a great multi-level map and provides lots of shooting fun.
  3. Fuel Station: This is an objective-based map that requires that you secure the facility. Head for the high ground for the best shooting point.

UFC 2009 Undisputed: I’m not much a boxing game person, but the graphics and play looked good.

God of War: This game looked interesting, too early to say whether it’s a rent or buy.

Rock Band 2: Pearl Jam’s album, 10 will be available soon as downloadable content! Pearl Jam fans of the world, unite!

Dante’s Inferno: I have actually read The Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri years ago. This game really does a great job of bringing Dante’s words to life. I will be honest however, I can’t tell from the preview of the main character is breaking out of the nine levels of hell, or breaking in. It doesn’t really matter, I’ll still put it in my Gamefly queue!

Grand Theft Auto: The Lost and Damned: This newest installment in the Grand Theft Auto series will really appeal to fans of the FX show, Sons of Anarchy. In this game, you are part of a biker gang, doing the regular Grand Theft Auto style fighting, stealing and etc.

Brutal Legend: This game boasts the voice talent of Jack Black, who stars as the roadie who fights his way to the top. I’m not sure what I think about this game yet. It looked kinda dumb from a storyline point of view. The graphics looked pretty good, but as any gamer knows, graphics aren’t enough to save a game. I could be wrong, we’ll see after it releases.

Fight Night, Round 4: This game looked really cool. I am not a boxing game person, but I want to play Tyson vs. Ali. That is a fight I could get into!

Terminator: Salvation: This game is based on the upcoming movie of the same name starring Christian Bale as John Connor. Personally, I felt that this was a game that should have been released a few years ago! This game looked really good and the graphics looked great as well.

Mafia 2: This game is based in the 1950s and is a action-shooter. I couldn’t tell much about the storyline in the trailer shown, but the graphics were some of the best I have ever seen.

Watchmen: The World is Nigh: This game looked like your typical “based off of a movie” game. I am not really a big fan of games made after movies, the graphics usually aren’t that great, the storyline is redundant and it’s just not that fun to play. If you don’t believe me, start watching G4TV’s XPlay“. Adam Sessler (who is the nicest person!) and Morgan Webb have a lot to say about them and it’s typically not good!

Those were all the World Premieres and I am most excited about the Gears of War 2 map pack, Pearl Jam’s album release for Rock Band 2 and Dante’s Inferno.

What do you think will be the next big game?
