Raising Nerdy Kids Part 1 of 3

So, the nerd-core community has gotten a lot of flak about kids and nerd-core. “Video games are violent and lead to obesity!” “Cosplay is evil! Kids shouldn’t dress up in those costumes!” “Comics are violent and not helping kids learn to read!”

I could go on, but I think you get the point. Let’s address these one by one, shall we? This first part of a three part series will address video games.

Video games are violent and lead to obesity. While there are violent video games out there, there are also ratings for each game. There is a great rating system put in place called the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board). This board determines each video game rating and they are accurate! They have a great website to check out each game and what the rating is as well, so if Johnny wants to play Gears of War 3, you can look it up and check it out on the site before you shell out the dough for it. Not sure what the ratings mean, their website also explains what each of the ratings mean. If you are a parent with any gaming console, you better know what these ratings mean! Don;t expect the people at the store to automatically help you on this one. I once saw a clerk suggest Gears of War 2 (which is rated M for Mature ages 17 +) to a mom of a 7 year old. I quickly told the lady about the rating system and suggested a much age appropriate game. Just because it’s the hottest game on the market, doesn’t mean it’s E for Everyone! With Sesame Street jumping on board with Nintendo for their Elmo’s A to Zoo Adventure and Cookie’s Counting Carnival , kids can actually learn in a fun new way!

As for the obesity issue, yes if you let your children game for over an hour a day they might get bigger! Of course if one sits in front of the TV for hours, the same is true. As parents, we need to have limits on how long our kids game for. Each of the gaming consoles have a timer set up on them that you can control how long your child can game for. (Hint: it’s usually in the system settings) Now there are days here at our house where we, as a family, will game all day. However that is few and far between.

With game systems like the Wii and the Xbox Kinect, people are getting their derrieres off the couch to play and I happily applaud both Nintendo and Microsoft on this one! One of Sophia’s (my 6 year old) favorite game is the Zumba game for the Kinect. She loves it! Whenever Brad (hubby) or I do a workout with the Wii or the Kinect, Sophia is right there with us doing it too!

So to wrap part 1 up in a neat little bow, parents need to realize that it is their job to watch the ratings on games and to make sure that their kids get plenty of fresh air and healthy food. Playing video games isn’t a bad thing, but it can become one if not supervised. So, please if you hear someone saying things like video games are bad, please stop to reconsider.

Game Review: SimplyFun’s Bank It!

I had a chance to sit down with my mom, my daughter, Sophia & I and play the SimplyFun game, Bank It! This game was a lot of fun! What I liked about this game is that it teaches kids, not only how to buy, but to save and to give to charity as well. This is a great game for kids who are just learning about money (my 6 year old for example) or kids who need to learn to be better with their money. So watch the video and enjoy!

Game Review: Back to the Farm game

My parents picked this game up at a street fair in the 70′s. I have played this game for many years a love it! Unfortunately, it is hard to find. But this game teaches about organic farming, and the process of farming.

Farmer Cards

Each farmer has a card to fill. The top (brown) cards are for setting up your farm, so they include tools, tractors and etc that you need to buy. The middle (green) line are for your animals and the bottom (blue) line are for your products from the farm. Now a farmer must purchase their items in order, so you have to fill the top line before you fill the middle and the bottom. The board also has some tricky spaces, such as the poisonous pesticides space, which you lose some of your items. My 6 year old loves this game, but I will warn you, it takes awhile to play! This is a Monopoly style game that takes some time, but it is really fun!

Digger’s Garden Match game review

Digger's Garden Match

Digger’s Garden Match is one of the many SimplyFun games that I enjoy! This game is an offshoot of dominoes, but a lot more fun! Instead of just matching numbers, like on dominoes, you can match up either color or shape, while trying to gain the most points.

While this game is mostly for the preschool set, adults and older kids enjoy it too! I have played this with just myself and my husband and with a large group of kids ranging from 4 to 10 in ages and we all had fun!

So make sure to pick up a copy as this is a great addition to any household!

Amazon Deal of Day: Epic Mickey

Normally I just quickly scan the Amazon Deal of the Day notification when it hits my inbox every morning. However this morning, my interest was piqued. Amazon’s deal of the day is the Epic Mickey game for $29.99 instead of $49.99. At that price it took me about 0.2 seconds to put one of those copies in my cart!

reviewed Epic Mickey shortly after PAX Prime this year and was really excited about it’s release. But with so many great games coming out at the same time (and at $60 a pop), I decided to wait and now I am glad that I did!

Game Review: Tibbar’s Big Blocks

Tibbar’s Big Blocks of Shapes is a great game for toddlers to learn their shapes and colors. While Sarah (20 months) was a big young to really get it, she still had a ton of fun playing with the shapes! This game is fun for any toddler, even if they are a bit young to understand which shapes go in which hole, they can still have lots of fun just putting the shapes in the block and taking them out again. Sarah played with this game for over 30 minutes and enjoyed herself. I am not worried about her playing with my demo of the game, as the games made for SimplyFun are well constructed and definitely stay together well! Enjoy this short video of Sarah playing the game!
