Why gamer guys can sometimes be better friends

Wes, Jason, Vern, Richard & Brad (my hubby) gaming.

Being a nerdy gamer girl, I tend to have more guy friends then gal friends. This is pretty normal in the realm of NerdLand. There are some awesome benefits to having gamer guy friends:

  1. They don’t care if you don’t look perfect. You don’t have to have the latest fashions on, or your makeup just perfect to hang out with your guy friends. They aren’t comparing if you look better in that outfit then they did or etc. Granted, every girl should look her best, but they don’t care if you don’t every once in a while.
  2. You can be blatantly honest with them and they won’t read into what you said. There are no “secret” or “hidden” meanings in things when you are honest with them. They don’t try to “read between the lines” like women do.
  3. You can finally make all those jokes that you can’t make with girls. Such as joking about the size of your “Deck” of WoW or Magic Cards. All those funny innuendo jokes that you have been saving for years are suddenly cool now! Or you can say things like “he, he, he said hard” and stupid dick and fart style jokes.
  4. They have sturdy shoulders. You can cry on their shoulders and they can deal with it. They might try to solve the problem, but most times they just let you cry.
  5. They typically don’t sleep much. This is good when you have insomnia and need to talk to someone because you can’t sleep! Because, guess what? They are awake too and mostly gaming, so you can game with someone!
  6. Guys are typically, “what you see is what you get”. In a world of trying to be someone else, or poserdom, this is refreshing. I think this is probably the best of all the benefits, because I can just let my guard down and be myself as well, it’s not always that easy with women.
  7. If you have kiddos, like I do, gamer guy friends make great “uncles”. The gamer guy friends that I have are all “uncles” to my two girls and will laugh and play with them as well. They don’t treat my kids like a nuisance, and they take the time to game with them as well.
  8. Guy friends make you laugh. Let’s face it girls, sometimes you need a good laugh and watching them act like animals or slap boxing each other is funny! Plus, sometimes, they say the funniest things. (or make inappropriate gummy bear scenes)

So, if you have have some great gamer guys in your life, make sure to thank them! So Ryan, Wes, Richard, Tiki, Tim, Dan, Brian, Craig, DJ, Coby, Nate, Alex, Jason, Vern, Brett & Solomon: Thanks for keeping it real and real funny!

If there are benefits that I missed, please let me know and I will add them!

Post Christmas recap

So, Christmas at our house rocked! The girls each got the Kinect games they wanted Disney Adventures & Once Upon a Monster. However, I did not expect Sarah my two year old to be scared of the cover of the Sesame Street game, so I will have to just plug it in and play it with her. I think she will really like it. So, why haven’t we played it yet, well, our couch is in the way thanks to the Christmas tree (which will be gone by tomorrow). So, later this week, Sarah will be trying out Once Upon and I will let you all know how that goes.

As for me, I got the last of the Hunger Games books, Mockingjay, and I devorued that book in well, two days. It was everything that I hoped it would be and the ending to the series could not have been better! Thank you Suzanne Collins for this great series! You rock! I also got the rest of the Inheritance series. I had to stop reading them a while back and was stuck on book two, so my hubby gave me the last two as a gift, so I am trying to finish up Eldest, so I can move on to the last two books. I also got some awesome girly bath stuff and makeup. Let’s face it, nerd does not equal a lack of attention to style. So after opening up a big palette of Stila makeup, I was a happy girl! Oh, and a pair of Guess jeans! (More about this in the next day’s post!)

Brad, the hubby, got some more more World of Warcraft Trading Card Game cards, a killer set of gaming dice, and an awesome WOW TCG play mat to name a few things. Also got him the essentials: jeans, sweatshirts and etc.

But all in all, it was a typical nerdy Christmas here at our house. Hope all of you had great (and nerdy Christmases too!)

What I want for Christmas, Geek-style!

Christmas gifts

Image via Wikipedia

So Christmas is coming up in like, 10 days. Oh, Boy! People keep asking me what I want for Christmas, so here is goes!

  1. Any Shadowrun book! My Saturday gaming group just switched over to playing Shadowrun and I am hooked! I have the core book, but why just have that when there are SO many others to add cool stuff with! Shadowrun is a post-apocalyptic world set in Seattle (woot! woot!) and there is technology and magic involved and it’s pretty awesome! Think Ghost in the Shell.
  2. Disneyland Adventures Kinect Game! I tried this game out at this year’s (2011) PAX Prime and it was a lot of fun! Now, this isn’t just a game for me, either, it’s for the whole family, so I like that too! This game was a ton of fun, because you got to travel around the park, meet up with characters and have a lot of fun! My 7 year old will love this game too!
  3. Sesame Street’s Once Upon a Monster! Okay, again I know, a kid game, but it’s the only game that my 2 & 1/2 year old can really attempt to play for the Kinect and she wants to play SO badly! Sometimes, watching your kids have fun with a video game is a gift enough! This game will teach Sarah to make up stories and she can interact with her favorite characters, Elmo, Cookie Monster and Abby Cadaby! Every time she sees the commercial for this, she goes nuts!
  4. The Hunger Games series. Okay, so I really just need the last book, but if you haven’t read them, you should! This series is the first in a long time to really captivate me, and it’s a kid/teen series too. I am not a big fan of this demographic when it comes to novels, but this series hooked me. Plus there is the movie version of the first book coming out in March. Check out the trailer!
  5. Any Terry Prachett Discworld book. I have played the game and it was fun, so when I found out that it was based on a series of books, I got very excited!
  6. My friends and family to be happy. (I know, it’s a little Miss America sounding!) My friends and I have had a crazy year and I just want it to end on a good note!
So whether I get any of these things or not, I hope that I helped you find a few gift ideas and I hope that most of all you enjoy Christmas or Hanukkah with your friends and family. The most important gift to me is seeing my friends and family happy!

Dungeon Mastering for Noobs

I was recently asked to be a Dungeon Master (DM) for the new series of Dungeon & Dragons (D&D)

d20

Encounters for our local game store, Wandering Havoc, and while I was honored, I was also freaked out of my mind.

See, I still consider myself a D&D noob. At times, I feel less than stupid. But after last night, I DM’d a hard one-off adventure called Siege at Gardmore Abbey. This is a level 6 one-off, so the powers are better for the characters and the monsters are a bit harder too. Now, what they don’t tell you in these one-offs is that as a DM, you do A LOT of page flipping. Back and forth and back and forth to get all the information you need to run the game. Normally, this wouldn’t be so back, but when you have a 7 year old and a 2 year old clamoring for your attention, it is really easy to lose your place and forget what you are doing. From now on, hire a babysitter when DMin, check.

So, after that adventure, which turned out fine, but could have been a lot better, I sent a frantic text to Tiki, who is also known as Tikipedia. The man knows it all about D&D! The other two that are right there with him are Tim, aka Timminy Cricket, who can be heard across the store saying “Use (xyz) for that.” much like Jimminy Cricket, hence the nickname. And of course, Richard, who I just realized we don’t have a nickname for. (That will have to be remedied!). But, I digress, back to texting Tiki. I felt like a flop, but Tiki assured me that everyone had a good time and really it all boils down to that.

I also think that one-offs are a bit harder, because they seem to short in comparison. With the new series of Encounters, Beyond the Crystal Cave, there is more information for me and the players. I have more a chance of researching and adding in little things for each character to make the game more enjoyable. For instance, my friend, Tiki is playing a Hengiyoki, (yep, say that 5x fast!) and he has a really cool backstory, so while it’s not written into the encounter story, I can write something in just for his character and for my other players characters to make the game more interesting in the long run. This will work for this encounter, because this series is more role playing based than tactic based. The last set of encounters, was more tactic based and this approach would not have worked as well.

All in all, I am learning and getting better each time I DM. I have to remember that I can’t compare myself to other DM’s, especially rock start ones! 1. I am a different person and I approach things differently and 2. it takes time to be a rock star! So, I am going to do my best and be the best DM, I can be!

For more information about being a great D&D player or DM, make sure to check out my friend Richard’s blog: GM Central

Thor or Why I hope the Avenger movie will kick ass!

Thor as depicted in The Super Hero Squad Show.

Image via Wikipedia

Thor. Oh, you Norse God of Lightening, why couldn’t you use Mjulnar to smash the lousy script that they gave you?

I watch Thor and all in all, it’s ok, but lacking. Watching this movie was like watching the Incredible Hulk with no Hulk Smash. It was sad. Thor is one of the few (and I mean few) characters that can actually take on and beat the Hulk, but yet they have him mooning over Natalie Portman and losing his poor hammer. Boo, frickin hoo! You are a NORSE GOD, get over it!

The acting was ok, but the script could have been better.  At least they didn’t go all sing-songy with him, like he is on Super Hero Squad, so I’m somewhat happy. But really, I was expecting more from the movie and especially more from Kenneth Branagh! Kenny-baby, you were trained at the Royal Shakespearean Theatre and this is all you got for me? Really??? The two measly fights in the whole movie were quick and lame. I want to see more damage and destruction, this is THOR, not whiney Spider-man. When you think Thor, you think damage and carnage, or at least that is what is portrayed in the comics. Did Kenny even read them, because I felt he missed the essence of Thor completely.

And for the record, I have a REALLY hard time buying Natalie Portman as an astro-physicist, unless all her training Naboo got her a Ph.D. (But really when would she have the time for that when she’s fight the Trade Federation, marrying Anakin and etc. Trust me, my husband is getting a Ph.D. and it takes a lot of time!)

But I digress, I think that the casting, other than Ms. Portman was great. Tom Hiddleston as Loki was amazing. He looked and really embodied the part as well. At first I wasn’t sure about Sir Anthony Hopkins, but I was quite impressed with his perfromance.

So all in all, it’s ok, but if you are a Thor fan, prepare to be disappointed. Let’s hope that the Avengers movie brings more damage!

IJustine aka thanks for the idiocy

It was recently brought to my attention (by the awesome Lawrence on G+) that the not-so-lovely, but famous IJustine is now posting gaming reviews. If you can call them that. I watched them and they were horrible. It’s just her playing a game and bs’ing in the process. Hey, Justine, that is not a review. You being all cutesy and playing a game, does not a gamer make!

To all of us legitimate girl gamers, we actually review the games that we play. We don’t just sit there and look cute. Oh, and complaining that you haven’t killed anyone in game is not a review.

So for us legitmate gamers, let’s not take props from this talent-less bimbo. Let’s actually reveiw the games that we play. Tell the people why you like them or don’t like them for that matter. Be honest, but don’t just do it for the paycheck! Some of us actually work hard to be legitimate without the fake boobs.

So thanks iJustine for being you, fake and money hungry!

Nerd-Girl that you need to watch: AggresiveComix

I have been watching AggressiveComix for a short while now and I love her reviews! She is witty, no-holds-barred honest and I love that! What’s also kick butt is that she is an actual NERD, not some poser wanna-be who just wants to make it big on YouTube! (I’m sure she wants to make it big, but she’s not a sell out (insert Olivia Munn jokes here)!)

Jenny is by far one of the better reviewers of nerdstuff and I highly encourage you to watch her, in fact, watch this!

Grey’s Anatomy = Welcome to the Suck!

And the winner of the We’ve Jumped the Shark Too Many Times goes to…Grey’s Anatomy! I live in the

Suck it Grey's!

Seattle area and this show is starting to make me hate it!

First it was a ferry crash. Okay, really? I commuted to Downtown Seattle via ferry for awhile and never had a ferry crash. The worst that happened in the last 10 years is a bump into the docks due to technical malfunction. Only the docks got a little bit of damage, no people were injured.

There have been others that have been tolerable, but this last shark jumping of a giant sinkhole? Really!!!

No, theoretically this could happen as part of the Seattle waterfront is built on piers, but the likelihood of such a sinkhole is pretty slim! Now, Port Orchard which is across the Puget Sound from Seattle had a sinkhole occurrence in 2007 due to massive flooding. (For more info on that click here.) Part of Port Orchard is built up on piers much like Seattle, however the damage shown on Grey’s was ridiculous compared to what actually occurred in Port Orchard.

So needless to say, I am so sick of the crap drama and the crap disasters that are really starting to make Washington, especially the Puget Sound area look like a dangerous pit fall. Thanks Grey’s, you suck! Can Seattle Grace transfer to another state please! Quit making ours look bad with your bs natural disasters and hospital shootings. As far as I can see in my research online, there were no hospital shootings in the state of Washington in the last 5 years, so thanks Grey’s for scaring the public!

While I can’t deter my husband from watching this crap sandwich with a side of crap, I will not be watching it anymore. Goodbye Grey’s have a nice shark jumping BS filled life!

Glee, Season 3: Completely un-gleeful

Okay, I normally like Glee and think it’s a pretty ok show, however after watching last night’s episode, I want to vomit. The characters are now dated and crappy, I am sick of the whiny Rachel and her sidekick Kurt. I also admit that it was pretty appalling when I saw the school counselor hand Kurt a “You and your Fag Hag” brochure. (Sure, we all know it’s true, but really? A bit tactless!) Oh, yeah and they are singing more show tunes (badly).

But there’s more! We now add Blaine to the New Directions (Um I mean lack of directions). So at least we will have one half way decent voice among the choir now. As I said the characters are dated and crappy and the only one whom I was remotely interested in was Quinn. I dig the new look an attitude, Quinn, reminds me of me! Rebel Yell, baby!

As usual, there is a war between Sue and Will, Rachel and Finn are back together and all seems right with the world of Glee. Too perfect, just like the musicals of old. However, I actually enjoy those.

This season’s opener made me want to put ear plugs in and scream to cover the crap singing. So, if you are Glee fan, have fun. But I do not plan of DVR’ing this crap anymore.

Glee, take a bow and walk offstage! Oh, yea, please now encore, really!

Batman 3 cast: Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman

I’m not sure what to think about this picture of Anne Hathaway’s Catwoman. Mostly because I don’t see Catwoman in this costume at all. No ears, just black leather. At this point I think that Halle Berry’s costume for Catwoman was better than this. Maybe this year at Comicon I will just wear black leather and a cool pair of shades and call myself Catwoman too! I think that this is the most disappointing costume for DC that I have ever seen. If this costume is any indication of her ability to play Catwoman, I am not impressed. I personally would not have cast her in this role, she’s not the Catwoman type, she’s more Selina Kyle than Catwoman and you need someone who can play both. So are you as un-excited about this costume and casting choice as I am? Let me know!
