Shrek vs. Prince of Persia!!!

Okay, so I have a chance to preview the following movies Shrek Forever After and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Both were good movies, but for totally different reasons.

First Shrek Forever After: This movie was WAY better than Shrek 3! (I have pretty much pretended that Shrek 3 doesn’t exist.) This final Shrek movie has action, humor and a good story as well. Shrek makes a deal with Rumpelstiltskin, which of course turns badly. Shrek has one day to fix this bad deal with true love’s kiss. This movie was funny and the action was good as well. My 5 year old loved it and said it’s the best Shrek movie ever. I would highly encourage you to go this movie with your kids, it’s got great lessons for them and as a parent, you can relate to Shrek as well.

This movie is rated PG and I think it could be a new family favorite! My movie rating 4 out of 5 stars!

Next up Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. First, let me throw out this disclaimer. I have never played the video game, so I am not basing my rating on that fact. I am simply rating it as a movie. While this was a good action flick and it had a good storyline (and well, let’s face it Jake Gyllenhall is not bad on the eyes), I have to admit, I think it would have been better without the princess. Her acting was good and she was pretty, but her voice was so high pitched and irritating that I would have rather listen to nails on a chalkboard! But if that’s the only thing that I can find wrong, then that’s not too bad. While Disney did produce this movie, I would stick to the PG-13 rating suggestion. There is violence and intense action, but also some sexual innuendo as well. While I previewed this movie, my 5 year old saw it, pretended to swordfight then left the room from boredom. (hey, she’s 5,cut her some slack!) Unlike most video game to movie productions, this storyline didn’t fall flat, the storyline was interesting and kept my attention. I would definitely take the older kids to see this flick!

This movie is rated PG-13 and it could be a family favorite for the older crowd. My movie rating 4 out of 5 stars!

So, enjoy those movies and if you have questions about any of the newer movies or older for that matter and wonder if they are kid friendly or not, please ask me! If it’s out, I’ve seen it!

I had a chance to do a write up on both of these films as well but I think I left Prince of Persia a bit more battered and bruised than you did. I believe I submitted my PoP article to your carnival already but here were my thoughts on both of those films.

I think your interpretation of PoP is pretty good from a strictly entertainment standpoint but if you look more into the film it all feels rather hollow and forgettable and that was my main beef. Shrek on the other hand though I didn’t find very funny I did manage to enjoy. The story surprised me as it was nowhere near the lighthearted romp that I expected. I mean who would expect a lovable comedic animated character to rage and then walk out on his family? It brought a much needed serious tone to the franchise while still holding true to the predecessors sense of humor.

Thank you for writing the comment on PoP. When I review I look at families in mind, so as a family movie, it wasn’t too bad. Again I never played PoP, so I can’t judge it by that, but I will say that it didn’t seem like your typical video game to movie fiasco (Doom anyone?).

And yes, Shrek Forever After was surprising, especially after Shrek the Third, which I barely acknowledge as a movie!

    Best Wishes,
    Krisy

I did not play PoP but I know many who have played it and seen the film. Most of their assessments came out along the lines of it fitting the games story pretty well but with some added plot to it that didn’t ruin the games story. I have seen video from the games though and know that in a sense of its visual style it is pretty much spot on. The twitchy camera movements are an annoying but i guess intentional addition to mimic looking around with a controller joystick but honestly even that kind of irks me. I think movies based on games, and books, and comics should really just try to be their own entity and not try to recreate something that is a completely different medium.
